What GSM Towel Does Your Business Need? A Buyer’s Guide for Care Homes, Hotels, Gyms and Spas

If you have ever compared towels from different suppliers, you will have seen GSM on every spec sheet. It is the single most useful number for judging a towel, but it is also the one most often misread. A heavier towel is not automatically the right towel for a business, and buying on weight alone can cost you money in the laundry for years afterwards.

This guide explains what GSM means, which weights suit which settings, and what else to check before you place a bulk order.

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It tells you how much one square metre of the towel fabric weighs. More weight usually means more cotton in the loops (the pile), which generally makes a towel thicker, softer and more absorbent.

Most towels sold in the UK fall somewhere between 300 and 800 GSM.

GSM bands at a glance

GSMHow it feelsTypical commercial use
300 to 400Light and thin, dries fastGyms, swimming pool changing rooms, economy lines
400 to 500Medium, practical and hard-wearingCare homes, budget and mid-range hotels, gyms
500 to 600Noticeably thicker and softerMid-range to upscale hotels, spas, treatment rooms
600 and aboveHeavy, plush and luxuriousBoutique and luxury hotels, premium spas

Treat these bands as a starting point rather than a rule. Two towels with the same GSM can feel very different depending on the cotton used and how they are made.

Why heavier is not always better for a business

At home, a heavy towel is a treat. In a commercial setting you also have to wash, dry and store it hundreds of times, and that changes the maths.

Drying time and energy. Heavier towels hold more water, so they spend longer in the dryer. Across thousands of washes a year, that adds up to real money in gas or electricity, and it slows your laundry down.

Machine capacity. Washers and dryers are rated by weight. The heavier each towel, the fewer you fit in a load, which means more cycles to get through the same number of rooms or residents.

Laundry charges. If you send linen out, many commercial laundries charge by weight. A heavier towel costs more to process every single time it is washed.

Replacement cost. In gyms and busy hotels, towels go missing. The more you pay per towel, the more each loss hurts.

The right towel is the lightest one that still gives your guests, residents or members the experience you want them to have.

Which GSM suits your sector?

Care homes

Care home towels are washed at high temperatures, often every day, so durability and drying time matter more than luxury. A good quality medium weight towel, usually somewhere in the 450 to 550 GSM range, tends to be the sweet spot. It is thick enough to feel comfortable on delicate skin and absorbent enough to dry in one gentle pass, but light enough to keep the laundry moving. See our care home linen range for options.

Hotels

Match towel weight to your star rating and what your guests expect. Budget and mid-range hotels usually do well with a 450 to 550 GSM towel that looks smart and survives commercial laundering. Upscale properties tend to move to 550 GSM and above, because guests notice the difference. Many hotels use a heavier bath sheet in the room and a lighter hand towel, which keeps the premium feel where it counts without inflating laundry costs. More on our hotel towels and linen.

Gyms

Gym towels get heavy use, frequent washing and a fair amount of wandering off. Lighter towels, roughly 350 to 450 GSM, dry quickly, fit more per load and are cheaper to replace. Most members want something clean and absorbent after a shower, not a spa experience. See our gym towels.

Spas

In a spa, the towel is part of the treatment. Heavier towels of 550 GSM and up, paired with quality bath robes, signal quality the moment a client picks them up. Balance that against how many treatments you run a day and how quickly you need items turned around. Browse our spa linen.

GSM is not the whole story

Once you have picked a weight band, these details separate a towel that lasts from one that looks tired after a few months.

Cotton quality. Longer cotton fibres make stronger, softer yarn that sheds less lint. Turkish cotton is highly regarded for exactly this reason, which is why our towels are made from 100% Turkish cotton.

Construction. Look at the edges. Firmly stitched hems and a woven border, such as a tramline or dobby border, help stop fraying, which is often the first sign of wear on a commercial towel.

Colour. White can be washed hot and bleached, which makes it the default choice for many hotels and care homes. Coloured towels are useful for colour coding or hiding make-up and fake tan marks, but check they are colourfast at the temperatures you wash at.

Consistency. When you reorder, you want the new stock to match the old. A supplier with consistent production means you are not left with mismatched towels in the same room.

How to check a sample yourself

You can sanity check a supplier’s GSM claim with a set of kitchen scales. Weigh a dry towel in grams, then divide by its area in square metres.

For example, a 70 x 130cm bath towel has an area of 0.91 square metres. At 450 GSM it should weigh roughly 410 grams. If it comes in much lighter, the spec may be generous.

Then put a few samples through your own wash and dry cycle five or ten times. How a towel looks after real laundering tells you far more than how it feels straight out of the packet.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GSM for hotel towels?

Most hotels use towels between 450 and 600 GSM. Budget and mid-range properties sit towards the lower end, while boutique and luxury hotels often choose 600 GSM or more for bath sheets.

Is 450 GSM a good towel?

Yes, for commercial use. 450 GSM is a practical, hard-wearing weight that dries quickly and stands up to frequent washing, which is why it is a popular choice for care homes, gyms and many hotels.

What GSM are gym towels?

Most gyms use lighter towels, typically around 350 to 450 GSM, because they dry quickly and are cheaper to replace when they go missing.

Do higher GSM towels last longer?

Not necessarily. Lifespan depends as much on cotton quality, stitching and how the towels are washed as it does on weight. A well made medium weight towel can easily outlast a cheaply made heavy one.
